Top 10 free PC programs everyone should have

pc programs softwares

This update will list the top 10 free PC programs everyone should have amongst millions of free and open-source applications available for everyone’s consumption and productivity. Many of them are even far better than some commercially available products.

Computer programs (software) are what give functionality to your PC. Without them, you would have nothing but expensive and useless hardware in front of you. It takes a long time and a lot of effort to develop, test, and release computer software. That is why most times, we are only given trial versions or trial periods to have a feel of what to expect before we decide to pay for its premium access.

However, there are thousands of useful computer programs that can be accessed entirely free. So I’ve decided to list them out by categories:

  1. Antivirus and malware protection

Antivirus software is critical for all PCs. Without it, you risk losing your personal information, your files, and even the cash from your bank account. Malwarebytes protects you against malware, ransomware, and other advanced online threats that have made antivirus obsolete and ineffective.

Most PC users realize that they need protection on their computer or may have an installed antivirus program from their computer manufacturer. What most don’t realize is that there are free programs that are just as good and in some cases, better than the commercial products. Below are our recommendations.

Antivirus program: Avast, Aviral Antivirus,

Malware and Spyware protection: MalwarebytesSpywareBlaster

2. Backup solutions

In the back of your mind, you know you need to back up all of your files and pictures. But the first question that pops up is, where do you start?

Backup refers to the copying of physical or virtual files or databases to a secondary site for preservation in case of equipment failure. In today’s fast-paced world, backing up your files is of the utmost importance. Typically music, movies, films, data files, projects, and photos are all stored in one drive.

There are hundreds of free and commercially available backup programs for computers. Unfortunately, many of those backups are stored locally, meaning if your house were to catch fire, get robbed, or if you lost your backup discs, all your data would be lost. This is why, when dealing with necessary data, we suggest users use online backup services.

Onsite backups are faster and more comfortable and should be your first line of defense against data loss. If you lose files, you can quickly restore them from an external drive.

Online backup solution: Mozy, Google Drive, MEGA or Dropbox

3. Browsers

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

Although Microsoft Internet Explorer comes pre-installed on Windows computers, there are several excellent free alternatives that everyone should try. These free alternatives can often be faster, have more options, and in many cases, be more secure than Internet Explorer.

Internet Browser: Mozilla Firefox , Google Chrome, Safari, Opera etc..

A good browser should at least meet this requirement:

  • It should be a fast, light, and tidy open source web browser.
  • Combine sophisticated technology with a simple User Interface.
  • give a safer and easier browsing experience

Its always recommended updating your browsers to protect you against viruses, scams and other threats.

4. Compression utility

File compression allows users to make one or more files into a smaller zip file. When downloading files on the Internet, you’ll eventually encounter a .zip, .rar, extensions, or other compressed files. It is commonly used when sending a file from one computer to another over a connection that has limited.

WinZip is the most trusted way to work with compressed files. No other compression utility is as easy-to-use or offers comprehensive and productivity.

Others are 7-Zip,

5. Chat and Messaging Software

After emails, Instant Messenger programs were developed and introduced. Most of the messaging and chat software are all about helping you keep in touch with your friends and loved ones. Whether you’re sending IMs, sharing photos, or doing a voice chat.

Skype is probably the best video and voice chat program for Windows PC, while WhatsApp Messenger is the best chat app for mobile devices.

Others are AIM, Badoo, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, etc.. I think Facebook can as well fall into this category. It’s worth the mention of sha.

6. Image Editing Software

Make your pictures shine and create your digital artwork with the best free photo editor for Windows. If you asked anyone which was the best photo editing software, they’d always say Photoshop.

Other examples are:

  • FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, and user-friendly image browser, converter, and editor. The application has an excellent array of features.
  • Paint.NET is a free image and photo manipulation application for the Windows platform.
  • The Creative Cloud Photography suite from Adobe is a world-class solution for anyone who has a passion for photography.

7. Windows Office Software

Create and edit text documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations with the best free office software for Windows.

When you think of office software, Microsoft Office is probably the first one that springs to mind. This is hardly surprising as so many computers come with a copy of it pre-installed, but the bad news is that in many cases, it is just a trial, and you’ll need to fork out for an Office 365 subscription to continue using it.

Few people can get by without a word processor, spreadsheet app, presentation tool, or even all three, but what if you don’t fancy the idea of coughing up for your office software?

Thankfully, there’s now a superb selection of free office software available,

8. Multimedia Software

A media player is a software application for playing back multimedia files, including audio and video. Most media players can play both audio-only and video (with sound), although there are a small number of players that focus on one type, known as audio players or video players. Good Multimedia Software should:

  • play music tracks from CDs and other formats at high quality. It has some cool effects
  • top video and audio quality, and support of multiple videos playing
  • Examples are GOM Audio, Media Monkey, QuickTime Player, VLC, etc..
